At the 2010 census, the populace of the town/city was 9,830, up from 8,971 at the 2000 census.

The town/city is the governmental center of county of Franklin County.

It was titled Jackson's Military Road after Andrew Jackson, and it passed through what became Russellville.

Russellville is titled after Major William Russell, an early settler in the region who helped in the assembly of Jackson's Military Road.

Russellville was incorporated on November 27, 1819. Russellville served as the first governmental center of county from 1818-1849 before it was removed to Frankfort (which served from 1849-1879).

After the fire at the courthouse in the third governmental center of county of Belgreen in 1890, the seat was returned to Russellville in 1891. Russellville is positioned in northeastern Franklin County at 34 30 37 N 87 43 42 W / 34.51028 N 87.72833 W / 34.51028; -87.72833 (34.510344, -87.728248).

Route 43 passes through the easterly side of the city, dominant north 18 miles (29 km) to Muscle Shoals on the Tennessee River and southwest 31 miles (50 km) to Hamilton.

Alabama State Route 24 passes through the south side of the city, dominant east 47 miles (76 km) to Decatur on the Tennessee River and west 26 miles (42 km) to Red Bay at the Mississippi border.

Enumeration Bureau, Russellville has a total region of 13.5 square miles (35.0 km2), of which 13.4 square miles (34.7 km2) is territory and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2), or 0.79%, is water. Age distribution was 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older.

Watermelon Festival - The annual "Watermelon Festival" is held each August in downtown Russellville, in which a carnival type event is held by the chamber of commerce to try to ignite interest in Franklin county and encircling areas.

Roxy Theater - The Roxy Theatre is positioned at 208 North Jackson Avenue in downtown Russellville.

It now has been revitalized as an entertainment venue due to the accomplishments of The Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council and the support of small-town citizens.

Musicians from North Alabama and Southern Tennessee incessantly are guests at the Rockin' at The Roxy show, which is now considered one of the longest running shows in the state of Alabama.

As one of three performance sites in the state, performers vie for a chance to advance in the competition to the state finals and then on to county-wide and nationwide competition which ends at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville Tennessee.

King Drive-In - The King Drive-In is positioned just north of Russellville on Highway 43.

The Strip - From the 1960s until approximately 2000, "The Downtown Strip" had been a origin of entertainment for small-town teenagers and young grownups throughout Franklin County.

Many small-town teenagers, for a number of years, drove up and down the "main drag" in downtown Russellville.

RHS stadium - Russellville High School Stadium is a place where small-town inhabitants watch the high school football team play.

Russellville's football team rates as one of the most prosperous teams in Alabama and rates as one the most attended stadiums in high school football.

WMTY-TV features region affairs about the Russellville region including news and weather, though most programming is religious.

Russellville has its own small-town degreed and seal certified meteorologist of over 10 years.

Russellville has its own journal (The Franklin Free Press) and is home to the Franklin County Times.

Luther Duncan, pioneer of 4-H youth development, a director of the Alabama Extension Service (now Alabama Cooperative Extension System) and president of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). Born near Russellville.
