The town of Luverne was one of various suburbs developed in the state as a result of barns construction.

In 1893, the people of Crenshaw County voted to move the governmental center of county from Rutledge to the more crowded Luverne. Luverne is positioned at 31 42 52 N 86 15 48 W. The town of Rutledge lies along Luverne's border.

Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 15.7 square miles (40.6 km2), of which 15.6 square miles (40.5 km2) is territory and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.17%, is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,635 citizens , 1,107 homeholds, and 710 families residing in the city. The populace density was 212.7 inhabitants per square mile (82.1/km2).
