The town/city is the governmental center of county of Marion County and since 1980 has been its biggest city, surpassing Winfield.

Hamilton was established in the early 19th century by pioneer who moved to the Alabama Territory from Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia and the Carolinas.
