As of the 2010 census the populace was 3,944. The town/city is the governmental center of county of Conecuh County.
Evergreen was established officially in 1819 when Revolutionary War veteran James Cosey and a several other men settled inside the present limits of the city.
The former governmental center of county of Sparta was burned in a federal raid amid the Civil War.
In 1866, the governmental center of county was moved to Evergreen as it was more centrally positioned in the county.
Evergreen was incorporated as a town/city on March 28, 1873. The Conecuh County Courthouse burned in 1868, 1875, 1885, and 1895. Evergreen is positioned near the center of Conecuh County at 31 26 6 N 86 57 18 W (31.435025, -86.954905). Interstate 65 passes through the northwest side of the town, dominant northeast 75 miles (121 km) to Montgomery and southwest 90 miles (140 km) to Mobile.
